Ethereal lakes lying in the magnificent Hunza

Though we all love mountains, forests and greenery, there is just something magical about the lakes situated in the Northern areas of Pakistan that are incomparable to any sight we have seen before. The lakes are so mesmerizing that most of the locals consider them as regions where mythical creatures such as fairies reside. Though we can’t guarantee you will spot a fairy near any of the famous lakes of Hunza Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan, we can promise you will fall in love with the enchanting scenery of the region.

Here are the three famous lakes of Hunza that will take your breath away:

Attabad Lake

Though one of the most visited lakes in Hunza today, behind Attabad lake’s beauty lies a great tragedy. Situated in Gojal Valley, the lake was once a town bustling with activity. Created on January 2010, the lake is the result of a landslide that hit the village and displaced more than a thousand people. Today, the lake is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the area.

Situated amidst glorious mountains, the bright blue lake is easy to access and provides numerous activities for visitors such as boating, jet skiing, fishing and other recreational activities. The mountains near the lake are often used as camping sites too. To get the best view of the area, head to Attabad lake during sunset and watch the sunlight turn the mountains into gold!

Naltar Lake

The three Naltar lakes are famous for one reason – their beautiful hypnotic colours that will leave you in awe. One lake is an ethereal dark green shade, the second lake is a stunning blue, and the third lake is a bright blue azure shade. Situated in Naltar valley, the lakes are so gorgeous that people travel from across the world just the set their eyes on the three of the greatest wonders of God.

However, do keep in mind that it is not easy to reach the Naltar lakes as they require a long jeep ride through rough and unpredictable terrain. Many times, the roads that lead to the lakes are blocked due to weather conditions. If you have travelled to Hunza and also gotten the chance to visit Naltar, you sure are lucky!

Borith Lake

Borith Lake in the Gojal Valley of Hunza has its own unique feel. Situated at 8200 feet, the lake lies within a hollow land and is considered a sanctuary since it’s the favourite spot for migratory birds such as the wildfowl. Though this lake doesn’t have shadows of looming mountains reflecting on it, the sky from that height creates a peculiar mirroring effect that leaves many in awe. Borith lake can either be accessed by jeep or a trek that takes about 2-3 hours.
